I was copying a bunch of files from one disk to another today and found that I couldn't copy some of the files. So I went on a bug hunt.
Of course, the error message was some wonderfully explanatory phrase such as "Cannot copy" with no hint as to why. File permissions were fine. No hardware error reports in the relevant logs. I could read the individual files just fine, too--I just couldn't copy them.
