"Windows Server 2008" Debuts at WinHEC

John Dorsey
The new moniker for Longhorn Server announced during Bill Gates' keynote at hardware conference

Bill Gates announced the official name of Microsoft's Longhorn server as "Windows Server 2008" at the company's Hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles. Copies of the Beta 3 version were available for attendees. This is the last scheduled beta before the launch planned for the end of the year.

Senior Product Manager Ian Hameroff demonstrated some of the security features in Windows Server 2008, including fine-grained password policy features that dynamically update a user's level of server access depending on the security settings on the client computer. Ian also showed access-restriction features for controlling the use USB thumb drives and removable media devices. Sys admins can prevent unverified users from stealing sensitive data via the USB ports, while still allowing the use of other USB devices. Microsoft's Steven Leonard was also on hand to demo the upcoming Windows Home Server running on a HP MediaSmart "headless" server. Windows Home Server will provide the usual network admin tools via a simple web interface as well as full hard-drive backup recovery, and each Home Server will also come with a free domain name on Windows Live. Bill Gates announced that the Home Server SDK is now available to system builders.

The keynote also featured a number of new and experimental technologies including UMPC handhelds, "Windows Rally" wireless networking, cell phone/television interop, and a projection tabletop monitor that allows interaction with real objects, such as game pieces and instantly scanning printed text placed on the table.

The archived keynote webcast will be available to view by Tuesday afternoon.
