Skype Recovering from Algorithmic Login Flaw
The Skype internet telephony service is recovering today from a flaw that prevented many users from logging in on for the last day and a half.
The Skype service is slowly recovering from a service disruption that began late Wednesday and continued through much of Thursday. Skype users were unable to log on to the network using their Skype client software. This effectively cut off lines of communication for those that have dropped their land lines and depend on Skype, a Luxembourg-based eBay subsidiary, for internet telephony.
Service appeared to be rapidly resuming early on Friday. Skype attributed the problem to "a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software," according to a statement on the Skype site. The statement also reassured users that the disruption was not the result of any sort of cyber attack. There were no further details about the nature of the problem, or what specific remedy was applied.
For any remaining users unable to sign in, Skype recommends leaving the client software running, as log in should occur automatically as soon as network availability allows.
