IEEE Approves 802.20 Wireless Standard

The standard is designed for broadband-speed access while moving at high speed.

The IEEE has approved 802.20, entitled "Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Standard Air Interface for Mobile Broadband Wireless Access Systems Supporting Vehicular Mobility - Physical and Media Access Control Layer Specification."

The standard is one of two broadband-speed wireless standards designed for wireless metropolitan-area networks. The other is the "WiMax" 802.16e, approved in 2005. While 802.16e was intended for fixed or slow moving clients, 802.20 is intended to function with vehicles moving up to 250 Km/h.

802.20 operates at speeds "over 1 Mbit/s," and utilizes spectrum below 3.5 GHz. WiMax operates below 6 GHz.
