Sentilla Announces New Mote Software Tool SuiteJohn Dorsey
Java-based pervasive computing platform promises faster, cheaper development for mesh networks and other remote-sensor applications
Sentilla announced the beta launch of a complete software suite to develop, deploy and manage pervasive computing applications running on potentially billions of tiny wireless "mote" devices simultaneously. The company was previously named Moteiv and focused on mote hardware; now the relaunched Sentilla will create software tools and VMs to used on motes form other companies, such as Texas Instruments' MSP430 microprocessor. The Sentilla Software Suite is comprised of Sentilla Work, an IDE based on Eclipse 3.2, Sentilla Point, a Java-based runtime, and Sentilla Tmote, a hardware platform that runs the Sentilla Point runtime.
Commenting of the announcement, Sun's James Gosling said, "Sentilla's software extends Java technology to these billions of computers, allowing the millions of Java software developers a way to create new, innovative industry applications. Millions of developers writing applications for billions of computers connecting to the network -- that's incredibly cool."
The company anticipates a range wide of possibilities for commenercial applications of pervasive computing, from transportation, health care, defense, manufacturing, agriculture, and entertainment. Sentilla will also provide APIs that allow pervasive applications to easily integrate with existing middleware, SOA, and web services .
