IEEEXtreme Worldwide Programming Competition

24-hour battle to determine the best collegiate programming team

Undergraduate and graduate computer programming students are gearing up to compete for the rights to call themselves the "world's best programmers" -- and win a free trip to one of hundreds of IEEE technical worldwide conferences -- during the upcoming IEEEXtreme Programming Competition 3.0. The third annual worldwide college programming competition involves teams of IEEE student members working collaboratively to solve a series of challenging programming problems.

IEEE conducts the computer programming competition and IEEE student branches will host the competitions on their local campuses.

The 24-hour competition will begin simultaneously at college campuses around the world on October 24. The registration deadline is Oct. 12, 2009. The languages supported thus far are Microsoft Visual C++/C#, C/C++, Java, C# -- and some surprises.

Last year, the University of North Texas's team took first place. With the proctors who volunteered their time, IEEEXtreme Programming 2008 had over 350 participants for the challenge from 31 countries. During the official 24 hours of the event, there were 16 problems for the teams to solve. At the start of the contest, the first booklet of 10 problems was distributed to all the proctors. The information was also placed on the web, so everyone had access to the same information at the same time. To keep interest high, a second set of problems was sent after 8 hours. Then, at hour 16, the final set of problems was delivered.

The grand prize for the first-place team this year is an all-expenses paid trip to an IEEE conference or event of the team members' choice.
