    MDA and its lesser-known supporters

On Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, I attended Steve Mellor's Model Driven Architecture (MDA) Birds of Feather (BoF) gathering at SD Best Practices. The group, numbering around 25, discussed MDA and relevant issues. Many people were interested in, or frustrated with, available MDA tool selection. When it comes to modeling and MDA, Mellor really knows his stuff, and in my opinion, his tool, Nucleus Bridgepoint , is worth taking a look at. Unfortunately, Mellor is also burdened with a conscience supported by a well-honed sense of integrity, so he didn't push his tool at all. He should have, because it's really solid.

I was intrigued by his observation that MDA is basically a marketing brand for tool vendors. Because of the wide range of tools that have adopted the MDA brand, the brand itself seems to have little meaning—you still need to be smart about which tools you decide to adopt. Understand your environment, understand your people, understand your need, and then pick a tool that best fits your situation—MDA compliant or not.
