CA has filled a significant hole in its storage portfolio with the acquisition of XOsoft, a supplier of continuous data protection (CDP) software.
The Islandia, N.Y.-based software company said Tuesday it has purchased XOsoft for an undisclosed sum; the buy follows CA's recent acquisition of MDY Group, a supplier of records-management software. The addition of both companies bolsters CA's lineup of data-availability solutions, particularly for customers that need to retain and bring data online in real time. While Symantec's Backup Exec offers CDP as do offerings from EMC, IBM and others, XOsoft CEO Leonid Shtilman says his company's patented technology combines CDP with replication and can be integrated into applications such as Oracle databases and Microsoft Exchange. "This is a huge difference," says Shtilman, who will stay on with CA. "We can bring a corrupted Oracle, SQL Server and Exchange [system] back to life with 100 percent assurance." XOsoft's CDP offering will become part of the BrightStor family, along with ARCserve, says Bob Davis, general manager and senior vice president of CA's storage business. Next year, the company intends to combine CDP into backup, replication and snapshot functionality. "We see this as the next-generation platform for data recovery," Davis says.
