Mix Me Up a JavaOne

As you head off to San Francisco, you are probably asking yourself the question that's on everyone's lips: Why isn't there an official JavaOne cocktail? Well, now there is.

Okay, I haven't cleared this with Jonathan Schwartz (but I did with Jonathan Erickson), so I guess it's the unofficial JavaOne cocktail. Whatever: I promise you it's delicious. The rich sweetness of the dark rum is nicely balanced by the slightly bitter coffee taste and the sharp bite of the fresh lemon. Tell your favorite San Francisco bartender to mix you one of these:

In a cocktail shaker, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in the juice of half a lemon. Add ice, 1-1/2 ounces Gosling's Black Rum, 1/2 ounce triple sec, and 1/4 ounce Kahlua. Shake it till your hands freeze to the shaker, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and drop in a single coffee bean.

I call it a JavaOne and I have served it to raves in my partner's restaurant where I tend bar on weekends. It's a variation on a rum-based sidecar developed by Thad Vogler at The Slanted Door in San Francisco.
