Sharing is Good

Hitting the sweet spot in the cost/performance ratio has motivated the use of shared cache in many modern multi-core processor designs. But the shared cache isn't all about cost cutting. It offers opportunities for optimizations and efficiency—for example, the shared cache is a much faster method than system memory for moving data between cores. Tian Tian of Intel discusses some of these considerations in "Effective Use of the Shared Cache in Multi-core Architectures."

Rendering Nirvana

The animation pros of Pixar make it look easy, but until recently the world of serious 3D software has been primarily the province of companies with the resources to run massive networks of high-end hardware. 64-bit hardware promised to shift that balance toward the desktop, making it more feasible for the average user to run the kinds of pro 3D apps that the big boys use. But it has taken a while for the software to catch up to the hardware. David Em discusses the current state of 3D on the desktop in "Desktop 3D Pulls up its Socks."
