Sharing is Good
Hitting the sweet spot in the cost/performance ratio has motivated the use of shared cache in many modern multi-core processor designs. But the shared cache isn't all about cost cutting. It offers opportunities for optimizations and efficiency—for example, the shared cache is a much faster method than system memory for moving data between cores. Tian Tian of Intel discusses some of these considerations in "Effective Use of the Shared Cache in Multi-core Architectures."
