Rendering Nirvana
The animation pros of Pixar make it look easy, but until recently the world of serious 3D software has been primarily the province of companies with the resources to run massive networks of high-end hardware. 64-bit hardware promised to shift that balance toward the desktop, making it more feasible for the average user to run the kinds of pro 3D apps that the big boys use. But it has taken a while for the software to catch up to the hardware. David Em discusses the current state of 3D on the desktop in "Desktop 3D Pulls up its Socks."
