Pros and cons of placing a Web server behind the firewall.
ADVANTAGES
DISAVANTAGES
Fail-safe protection
Might not support all desired protocols (especially multimedia)
Reduces burden on O/S administrator to maintain optimum security configuration
Potential performance hit
Protects against mistakes in Web-server configuration (for example, accidentally leaving a dangerous network service running)
Increases risk to other systems on the Web server's LAN segment
Prevents server crashes from denial-of-service attacks
Additional cost
Convenient attack alert mechanism (paging, email, audio alarm)
Complicates management of remote access (approved users must be explicitly listed and authentication method configured)
Provides strong authentication method for remote access, accommodating remote updates to the server without increasing risk of attack
