We've done our best to tune Search so it always returns meaningful results. We've also added several new functions to help you quickly find exactly what you're looking for.

Sort By Subject:
Perhaps the most powerful new feature is the ability to focus the results of your original search query by topic.

In the upper left corner of the search results page, you'll see a box labeled "Click The Links To Focus Search By Subject." By clicking these categories, you can drill down to return results only in the subject in which you're interested.

At the top of the center column of the search results page, you'll find a "Bread Crumb" (for example: 3600005 > Software > Desktop Applications) that tells you exactly where you are in the subject hierarchy.

To see all articles published by a site, simply click the search button without a term in the search box or click the site name at the top of the Search By Subject box. Both actions will return all articles classified into the current subject area.

Search Archive:
In some cases, older content has been moved from the main search collection into an archive. If at first you can't find what you're looking for, or if you want to search older content, click the "Search Archive" link at the bottom of the Search Results or at the bottom of the Focus Search By Subject box. This will automatically return archive results for the current search term.

Top Ten Search Queries:
To see what other users of the site search for most often, check out the "Top 10 Search Queries" box in the middle of the left column on the search results page. Just click a term to launch a search.

Search Other Sites In The Network:
To get results for your search term from a wider selection of CMP Publications, use the "Search Other Sites In The Network" box in the left column of the search page. Just click on a publication to automatically get results for your current search term. This will return results from the new site without taking you away from the site you're already on.

Headline Hunter:
Remember the headline of a story you want to find again? The Headline Hunter box, also in the left column, lets you search for terms that occur only in the headlines of articles. For best results, limit your queries to one or two terms at a time.

Sort By Date Or Relevance:
Depending on the site, search results are initially displayed in Chronological order, most recent first, or by Relevance, most relevant first. Use the "Results sorted by Date or Relevance" option control near the top of the middle column to change the way results are displayed.

Search Tips:
Extend Your Search--Separate multiple search terms with the word OR if you want to find documents that contain any of the terms. For example, searching for wireless OR Internet OR sales will return documents that contain any of these terms.

Focus Your Search--Separate multiple search terms with the word AND if you want to find documents that contain all of these terms. For example, searching for linux AND enterprise will return documents that contain both words.

Search Exact Phrases--Put multiple search terms in quotes if you want to search for an exact phrase. For example, searching for "wireless internet" will return documents in which these two words appear next to each other, as in "Wireless Internet sales exceeded expectations in the third quarter."

Search White Papers and Microsites:
In addition to searching for editorial content, all search queries also automatically return results in our collections of industry white papers and company-sponsored Microsites. You can find the top four results for each search in the top right hand corner of the search results page under the heading "More Search Results."

For a full search of white papers or Microsites for the current search term, click the bold links at the bottom of these results: "Search all white papers," or "Search all Microsites."
